Glucocorticoids are often included with other agents in cancer treatment although the mode
of action is not clear. They are useful in the primary combination chemotherapy of both acute
and chronic lymphocytic leukaemias, Hodgkins' and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, multiple
myeloma and breast cancer. Other uses for glucocorticoids in cancer patients include an anti-
inflammatory action for the oedema of cranial and spinal metastases, a weak
antihypercalcaemic effect and the ability to suppress tumour-related fever.
